Drive-in theatres were once common in Indiana. I still remember going to drive-ins with my parents in the early 1980s when I was a young boy. My dad had a 1971 Chevrolet Malibu convertible, which was the perfect car for watching a movie! There were drive-in theatres in Fort Wayne that I remember, and many surrounding small towns had them as well. Today, there are none left in Fort Wayne; and only a few remain in some of northern Indiana's small towns.
One of those few drive-in theatres that remain in operation is the Auburn-Garrett Drive-In, located on State Road 8, just west of State Road 327, outside the small town of Garrett in Dekalb County, Indiana. Auburn, Dekalb County's largest town, is located about three miles east of the Auburn-Garrett Drive-In.
The Auburn-Garrett Drive-In opened on May 16, 1951 as the Tri-Hi Drive-In. Isn't It Romantic? was the first film shown there. In 1959, it was renamed the Garrett Drive-In, and the following year it took its current name. The theatre's current screen was built in the early 1970s.
On August 29, 2022 the Auburn-Garrett Drive-In was hit by a severe wind storm that knocked down half of the screen. I photographed the drive-in the first time back in 2005, when the screen was still intact. I went back in April, 2023 and photographed it again.
