The Dead Pig House

This house on County Road 100W, south of County Road 900S, was visible from Interstate 69 in Huntington County, Indiana. The owner still farmed the land around it but lived elsewhere. I started photographing it at the beginning of 2002, and returned several times before I moved to New Mexico in 2006.

In 2004, my friend Kevin and I went there to photograph. The farmer pulled in with a pickup truck and a flatbed trailer that had the most disgusting thing I've ever seen...or smelled...in my entire life on it. There were two large, long-dead, very decomposed hogs on the trailer. They had turned green! GREEN! I almost threw up before I got to the car. Kevin said he was glad he lived in the city, and I had to agree.

When I moved to Santa Fe in June, 2006 the house was still there. I flew back to Fort Wayne to visit my son in April 2007 and drove back to Santa Fe after that visit. I was shocked to find the house gone and its basement filled in with dirt.
