Hyde Brothers Books is a locally owned used book store on Wells Street in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Opened in 1992 by Sam and Joel Hyde, the store looks deceptively small from outside its old yellow brick storefront. Inside the store, the main floor, the basement, and a large portion of the storefront next door are filled with books.
The floor to ceiling shelves feature ancient wooden rolling ladders, like an old library, and there are stacks of books on the floors. The store has always had at least one bookstore cat in residence; there are currently two of them patrolling the aisles, demanding attention and love from the customers.
I cannot remember how much money I have spent at Hyde Brothers over the past 25 years, but it has been a lot! Much of my own library of more than 2000 books came from this store. I have visited used book stores all over the United States, and Hyde Brothers will always be my favorite.
Sadly, Sam Hyde passed away on July 9, 2019. He was one of the kindest, most generous people that I have ever known. When I was a young artist struggling to make enough money to live, Sam often gave me books that he thought I would like. He did the same for others, as well. There aren't many others like him, and he is missed.
