An old brick building with a bricked up door and a boarded up window that has an old exhaust fan installed in it. The window is crowned with an ornately carved limestone lintel. This is the former Fairfield Furniture Galleries building at the corner of Fairfield Avenue and Taylor Street in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

The Former Fairfield Furniture Galleries Building

A few years before I made this photograph, Fairfield Furniture Galleries in Fort Wayne, Indiana moved their store to a new location on the city's north side. The large two-story building at the corner of Fairfield Avenue and Taylor Street was subdivided into smaller retail storefronts.

The building had always, as long as I can remember, had a modern appearance that gave the impression that it was a product of the late 20th Century. A few months ago, work crews began removing the building's modern plastered facade, revealing a beautiful, but badly deteriorated, 19th Century brick building!

The building is now being restored. This boarded-up window and bricked-up door are on the north side of the building, facing Taylor Street. The fan in the window was left there back when the building was covered up by the facade that had hidden the structure's true appearance for so long. The beautifully sculpted lintel over this first floor window is duplicated on all of the second floor windows on the front of the building, facing Fairfield. Sad that anyone thought that these should have been covered up by a soulless plastered facade.
